Index Wagering Help |

Index Wagering is one of the newest and most exciting forms of wagering on Sport. It was developed in the UK in the 1970's and became a major part of British wagering in the 1990's. VIP is the first Sportsbook in the US market to offer a comprehensive Index Wagering Service on all Major Sports. This includes Pro and College Football, Pro and College Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, Major Horse Racing, Nascar, Formula 1 and more exotic events such as the Oscars and US Elections. Index Wagering works on the basis that "The more you are right the more you win". The opposite is also true, so it is extremely important that you understand both the mathematics and risks involved in index wagering. 1. How does it work? Index Wagering revolves around the totals of certain numbers in sporting events. The key idea behind all these bets is the SPREAD , representing the difference between the levels at which you can back your selection to either exceed expectations or to not live up to them. The best way to illustrate Index Wagering is to show some examples of the different types of wagers that we offer. There are three different types of Spread Bets : Total Numbers Bets, Supremacy Bets, and Range Bets. 1. Total Number Bets In the 2002 Superbowl we were offering a Spread Bet on the total points
scored in the match. If you fancied a high scoring game you would BUY (GO HIGH) at 48. This number (48) is then applied to the final score (both teams' scores combined) for the game to calculate how many points you would win or lose. If you fancied a low scoring game you would SELL (GO LOW) at 45. This number (45) is then applied to the final total for the game. Once you have decided whether you want to BUY (GO HIGH) or SELL (GO LOW) you must then decide how much you would like to risk per point. If you decided to risk $10 per point and BUY (GO HIGH) at 48 you would win $10 for every point scored above 48 but lose $10 for every point below 48. For example if the final total was 60 as a buyer you would win (60-48) 12 points. Since you had risked $10 per point you would win $120. If the final total was 40 you would lose (48-40) 8 points i.e. you would lose $80. If you decided to risk $5 per point and SELL (GO LOW) at 45 you would win $5 for every point below 45 and lose $5 for every point above 45. If the final total was 40 you would win (45-40) 5 points. Since you had risked $5 per point you would win $25. If the final total was 60 you would lose (60-45) 15 points. Since you
had risked $5 per point you would lose $75. 2. Supremacy/Winning Margin Bets You BUY (GO HIGH) if you think the favorite will win by more than the
BUYING PRICE. Example: If you fancied St Louis to win by more than 16 points you would BUY (GO HIGH) at 16. If you fancied New England to either win the game or hold St Louis to less than 13 points you would SELL (GO LOW) at 13. The final result was St Louis 17 New England 20. The St Louis Winning Margin was -3 (MINUS 3). If you had decided to BUY (GO HIGH) at 16 you would have lost 19 points ( 16 plus 3 - the margin of defeat). If you had risked $10 per point you would have lost $190. If you had decided to SELL (GO LOW) at 13 you would have won 16 points (13 plus 3 - the margin of defeat). If you had risked $20 per point you would have won $320. All bets are subject to limits (STOP LIMITS or RANGES) predetermined by VIP to ensure that there is a specified MAXIMUM WIN & LOSS to any wager. In this example the STOP LIMIT is 25 points which means you can not win or lose more than 25 points. 3. Range Bets A RANGE BET is a proposition where the parameters are either determined by the running time of the event (i.e. Time of 1st Goal) or by a scoring system or MAXIMUM MAKE-UP specified by VIP. Wagers on Finishing Positions are different to other types of Spread Bets in that you SELL (GO LOW) a participant if you expect them to perform well and BUY (GO HIGH) them if you expect them to perform badly. We mainly offer these props on Golf , Nascar and Horse Racing. Example: Tiger Woods Finishing Position If you fancied Tiger to finish better than 6th you would SELL (GO LOW) at 6. If you fancied Tiger to fare worse than 9th you would BUY (GO HIGH) at 9. Tiger went on to win his 3rd Green Jacket so BUYERS of Tiger at 9 would have lost 8 pts while SELLERS of him would have won 5 points. If you had bought $10 per position at 9 you would have lost 8 (9-1) multiplied by 10 i.e. $ 80. If you had sold $20 per position at 6 you would have won 5 (6-1) times 10 i.e. $100. All bets are subject to limits (STOP LIMITS or RANGES) predetermined
by VIP to ensure that there is a specified MAXIMUM WIN & LOSS to any
wager. In this example the RANGE has a minimum value of 1 and a maximum
value of 50. |
